Vindicat atque Polit (Latin for ‘Maintain and Refine’) is the oldest student association in the Netherlands (founded in 1815), and the largest student association of Groningen.

The first society building, MVTVA FIDES (‘Mutual Trust’), was founded on March 3rd, 1815. The association was based in a number of different locations in the city centre, until the students moved into their own premises on the main square, Grote Markt 13. The building was destroyed, however, during liberation day on April 17th, 1945.

Eventually, the association moved to their seventh Mutua Fides accommodation, on the east side of the main square, Grote Markt 27, which is where they are still based today. In the nineties renovations took place, and the building was extended.

Since 2002 there have been plans for the construction of the Groninger Forum (a centre for knowledge and culture) on the east side of the Grote Markt, and therefore the council has requested Vindicat to move to the corner of the Grote Markt and the Martinikerkhof. In 2011 the construction work was in an advanced stage, and if everything goes according to plan, Vindicat will move into their 8th Mutua Vides accommodation towards the end of 2013.

Since 1997 Mutua Fides has been one of the Eurosonic Festival locations, and during the festival the (private) association opens her doors to the public. Both national and international bands have set foot on stage here in recent years, and the number of guitar and (punk) rock bands that have played here is striking. They include Gluecifer (NO, 1999), Saybia (DK, 2002), Mystery Jets (GB, 2006), Enter Shikari (GB, 2007) and Audrey Horne (NO, 2010).

The line-up on the first evening of the 2003 edition included only Dutch bands, such as The Apers, Spoiler en 35007, and the festival before that featured Dandruff!! (1997) and Green Hornet (1998) from Groningen. The association was not involved in the Eurosonic Festival in 2000 and 2001.
